Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
