European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Additional Updates in the News

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy actions.
