Minister Confirms MoD Examining Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Staff Instructed to Avoid Secret Talk in Vehicles.

An defense official has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been told to refrain from talking about classified matters in any cars.

Safety Advice for MoD Personnel

During a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about classified information while riding in China-made vehicles.

The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any car, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

The revelation follows reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

The broader security environment highlights the significance of strong measures and caution in every areas of government activities, from vehicle usage to discussions practices.
