Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
